Music is a fairly important thing to me. I love music of all kinds (save most hip hop and most raps). I like new age, soundscapes, classical, pop, r&b, rock, metal, therapeutic, you name it. Whatever I prefer depends on my mood.
I listen to music for many reasons. Each reason has a specific type of music to accompany it.
When I am going to bed, I enjoy listening to soundscapes. Soundscapes is a kind of music that mixes elements of nature sounds, new age instrumentation, and sound therapy. I am a firm believer that music actually has an effect on you mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you give me a CD and say that it has brain-wave pulses that prevent heart disease, I will definitely listen to it, if it isn’t too strange. I am currently listening to a CD that is continuous ocean waves, with delta brainwaves mixed in. They are supposed to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and have deeply restful sleep. I find that when I listen to this CD, I am less tired when I wake up at five o’ clock in the morning (though still quite tired).
Another CD that I listen to at bed time is Chakra Suite, by Steven Halpern. This CD uses tonical progressions of different notes. There are seven different progressions: one for each chakra. Each progression focuses on a single note, starting with C representing the Root Chakra, and ending with B for the Crown Chakra. I could explain what each of the seven does, but that would be off-topic. I will post the link as a comment.
At any rate, I listen to CDs like the above two at bedtime. I find that they greatly improve the quality of rest. I have a total of 15 such CDs. They are some of my favourite albums, and I wouldn’t mind if they formed all of the music in the world. Soundscapes is my favourite genre of music.
I listen to rock when I wake up. Every night, I tune my radio to 95.9 the Rat (best station ever). I then set the alarm to go off and automatically switch to the radio. This ensures that I have some nice, rousing music to wake me up. I find it hard to fall asleep when rock is playing, so it is perfect alarm music. In addition, I set my phone to blast RuneScape music every 5 minutes from 5:00 all the way to 5:30, and go off one last time at 6:00. The rock and the loud RuneScape music combine to form a cacophony that easily rouses me from my slumber.
When I am doing my homework, I usually listen to RuneScape music, which, as I said before, rouses me and focuses my attention. It is lively enough to keep me awake, and calming enough to focus my attention. When I don’t listen to RuneScape music, I either play Pachacamac- a Peruvian folk band- or set my mp3 to shuffle for some good variety. All of these musical situations help me stay focused on the task at hand. Don’t ask why. They just do it for me.
If I ever wish to draw inspiration from music, I usually turn to Chakra Suite, RuneScape music, or Pachacamac. All are alternative styles of music, seldom listened to on an average day, or by your average person.
RuneScape music instills in me a sense of adventure, and inspires me to focus on the task at hand, with determination and deliberation. It reminds me of perseverance, and endurance, and always gives me a little extra push. In particular, it motivates me to do things that I am normally reluctant to do, or normally incapable of doing, such as running track, or writing essays.
Pachacamac reminds me of other cultures, and instills in me a sense of adventure just as RuneScape does. It transports me to a far off place where I can easily focus my mind, and relax my body. It is as if I am listening to a vacation, and going their just by doing so. Misty mountains, steamy jungles, and Incan festivals all come to mind when I listen to Pachacamac, taking me somewhere that I can be careless, and free of troubles. By so doing, it energises me and helps me focus.
Chakra Suite is something I usually listen to during meditation, or yoga. It helps clear my mind, and soothe my soul. This music instills in me an inner peace, and I am usually at my most calm state of being. My heart rate slows, and I fall into silent pondering. I ponder the events of the day. I focus on how everything I’ve experienced affects me, and then I meditate on any disturbances of my inner peace. I focus on them, and ponder on how I can resolve them. As each Chakra progresses on the CD, I focus on the corresponding Chakra, and between the healing effects of the music and the healing effects of meditation, my issues are resolved and I become balanced again, and a balanced self ensures a balanced life, which in turn ensures a good life. “Balance is power,” Guthix wisely said.
Balance is not the only thing with power however. Music has power as well. If you listen to the right kind of music at the right time, or listen to any music at all, you will always find that music does have power. Music impacts our state of mind, and as an extension, impacts our body and soul. Music does different things for all of us, but who can easily say that music does nothing for any of us?
